At a press event in Cupertino, Apple recently unveiled a developer’s preview for the 4th version of its iPhone OS. The announcement included many things iPhone users have been clamoring for including multitasking- the ability to run apps in the background while doing other tasks, a unified email inbox, better app organization, and more. But amidst these updates came the interesting revelation that Apple will be including an XboxLive-esque achievement system called Game Center.

Moving forward, iPhone game developers will be able to implement achievements, leaderboards, and more in a persistent back-end system. While some companies have already built their own versions of this for their iPhone games, it could be exciting to see a single, unified system for the entire platform.
